Quick answer

Risk warning

Forex and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. The brokers' own figures for retail accounts that lose money: Scope Markets 59.59%, IC Markets 76.3%, FXPesa 80%, HFM 80.83%, Pepperstone 82% and Exness 84.12%. FP Markets and AvaTrade show the 75% to 95% range of the CMA's standard risk warning (Circular No. 03/2023), and we found no percentage on XM's site or for Admirals SC Ltd's own clients (each broker's site, 23 October to 2 November 2026). Consider whether you understand how leveraged products work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

How we chose these brokers

We judge each broker's platforms first on whether a Kenyan resident trades on them through a CMA-licensed company, then on our web platform and mobile app scores, and then on the overall score, which weighs costs, funding, product range and support as well, with safety and regulation weighted most. That puts Admirals last: its platforms score well, but our Kenyan account was opened with its Seychelles company. Between 22 and 29 October 2026 we placed at least one real trade at every broker here.

Execution quality and slippage

Execution quality is the gap between the price on your screen and the price you get. It only shows across many trades: the same instrument at every broker, in busy and quiet sessions.

We placed between one and four real trades at each broker on this page, too few to measure execution quality, so no platform here is scored on execution, slippage or requotes.

Are online trading platforms regulated in Kenya?

Yes, when the broker behind them is licensed: the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) licenses forex brokers in Kenya. MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and the brokers' own apps are software, and the licence that matters is the one held by the company that holds your account, so check that company on the CMA register before you deposit.

Always verify a broker's legal entity and licence number on the regulator's public register before depositing funds.

What to check when comparing brokers in Kenya

  1. Start with the broker, not the platform: check that the company holding your account is licensed by the CMA.
  2. MT4 and MT5: expert advisors and a large library of indicators.
  3. cTrader and TradingView: their own charting and order entry, as alternatives to MetaTrader.
  4. A broker's own app: its charts and order types differ from broker to broker, and from MetaTrader's.
  5. Check that the platform you want is offered on your account type, not just by the broker.
  6. Check funding too: a KES or USD account, M-Pesa or bank transfer, and what each costs.

Kenya-specific considerations

Trading on a phone

We traded on an Android phone in the Exness, XM and HFM apps and managed trades in the MetaTrader 5 app at Pepperstone and IC Markets; order entry, stop loss and take profit worked in each. HFM's app once failed a Touch ID login with a network error, and we did not trade in the Pepperstone or FXPesa apps.

KES or USD account

Accounts may be held in KES or in USD. If yours is in USD, every KES deposit and withdrawal is converted, so check the rate as well as the platform's costs.

M-Pesa and bank funding

Check whether the broker takes M-Pesa or bank transfer for Kenyan clients, and whether you can fund from the app as well as the website.

Leverage limits

At most 1:400 on any currency pair or underlying asset at a CMA licensee (reg. 19(1) of the 2017 Regulations), and none of our accounts with the brokers' Kenyan licensees went above it. Our Admirals account, opened with Admirals SC Ltd in Seychelles, opened at 1:1000, above the cap the 2017 Regulations set for CMA licensees. Check the limit on your own account.

Trading tax in Kenya

We found no tax rule written for forex or CFD trading, in the Income Tax Act or in KRA guidance, when we checked on 3 November 2026. The Act taxes gains or profits from any business (section 3(2)(a)), so regular trading profits are most likely taxed as business income: added to your other income and taxed at the resident rates, 10% on the first KSh 288,000 a year, rising in bands to 35% on income above KSh 9.6 million (KRA bands in force since 1 July 2023). The 15% capital gains tax is charged on transfers of property such as land and shares, and the KRA's page on it does not mention forex or CFDs.

The Act sets no threshold for when trading becomes a business, such as a number of trades. Its definition of business includes "every manufacture, adventure and concern in the nature of trade" (section 2), so it depends on how you trade: keep a record of every deposit, trade and withdrawal. If it is a business, declare the profit on your annual return. From 2027 the return is due by 30 April for the year before, not 30 June (Finance Act, 2026), the same day the tax is due. A trading loss can only be set against later profits from the same source (section 15(4)).

This is general information, not tax advice.

What opening an account with a CMA-licensed broker involves

  1. 1
    Check the CMA licence

Check the company on the CMA register, and match it to the company your client agreement names.

  2. 2
    The demo account

Demo trades use virtual money on the same platform and app. Demo prices and fills can differ from a live account's.

  3. 3
    Download from the official source

Use the link on the broker's own website. Clone apps copy real logos.

  4. 4
    Verify your identity

A Kenyan national ID card or passport, and at most brokers a proof of address such as a utility bill or bank statement. In our tests, verification took from about two minutes to two days.

  5. 5
    Turn on two-factor login

    Before you fund the account.

  6. 6
    Funding the account

Check whether you can pay in by M-Pesa or bank transfer in KES, and what each route costs.

  7. 7
    The risk of loss

Forex and CFDs are leveraged, and most retail CFD accounts lose money. Spreads and fees are charged on every trade, win or lose, and a better platform does not reduce the risk.

Risk & disclosure. Trading forex and CFDs carries a high risk of losing money rapidly because of leverage, and most retail investor accounts lose money. A better platform does not make a leveraged trade any safer. Rankings are editorial and based on our independent methodology. BestForexBroker may earn a commission from some brokers we review. How we rank trading platforms

Safety and regulation carry the most weight of any category we score. Between 22 and 29 October 2026 we opened a real account at each broker here, funded it by M-Pesa and placed at least one real trade, on a Windows computer and an Android phone: on the broker's own web platform, MetaTrader 5 desktop or web, or an app.

The order follows the account holder first, then our web platform and app scores, then the overall score.

MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView

The platform is the software you trade on; the broker is the company that holds your account. Most of the choice comes down to these:

  • MT4: forex-focused and simple, with a large library of expert advisors and indicators.
  • MT5: more timeframes, order types and asset classes than MT4, with depth of market and a faster strategy tester.
  • cTrader: an alternative to MetaTrader with detailed charting, depth of market and its own automated strategies (cBots).
  • TradingView: a charting platform; where a broker connects to it, you can place trades from TradingView's charts.
  • The broker's own app: compare its charts and order types with MetaTrader's before you rely on it.

The platforms table above shows which broker offers which, as we confirm each one.

Funding a trading account in KES

Accounts may be held in KES or in USD. Where yours is in USD, each deposit from a KES source is converted, and so is each withdrawal back.

The funding routes worth checking before you open an account:

  • M-Pesa: all ten brokers here took our M-Pesa deposit and paid our withdrawal back to M-Pesa. Deposits arrived within minutes; withdrawals took from under a minute to about a day, and only Admirals charged a fee (3 percent).
  • Bank transfer in KES: we have not tested it; the brokers quote from one to fifteen working days, and each review gives the broker's own figure.
  • Card: we have not tested it; the terms we read send a withdrawal back to the method you paid in with, cards first.

Mobile security before you fund from your phone

Treat a trading app like your banking app. Three habits matter more than any feature:

  • Install only from the link on the broker's own website
  • Turn on two-factor authentication before you fund the account
  • Never share a PIN or one-time code with anyone who contacts you claiming to be from a broker

If a platform cannot say which company holds your account, stop there.

Frequently asked questions

Which trading platform is best in Kenya?
On our tests, Exness: its own web terminal and app handled a real trade and the whole account, with two-factor login. FP Markets and Pepperstone both offer MetaTrader 4 and 5, cTrader and TradingView. Whatever the platform, the licence that matters is held by the company that holds your account: check that it is licensed by the CMA.
Is online trading legal in Kenya?
Yes, through a licensed broker: the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) licenses forex brokers in Kenya. A firm without a CMA licence gives you no CMA complaints route and none of the licence's protections, and the CMA publishes cautions against unlicensed firms.
Which brokers here offer MT4 and MT5?
All ten offer MetaTrader 5, and all but Scope Markets offer MetaTrader 4 too. We traded on MetaTrader 5 at Pepperstone, FP Markets, IC Markets, FXPesa, Scope Markets, AvaTrade, HFM and Admirals; at Exness and XM we traded on their own platforms.
Can I trade on my phone?
Yes. Exness, XM, HFM, AvaTrade, FP Markets, Pepperstone, Admirals and FXPesa have their own trading apps, IC Markets a client portal app, and every broker here works with the MetaTrader 5 app. We traded in the Exness, XM and HFM apps, watched our trade and withdrew in the AvaTrade app, and managed trades in the MT5 app at Pepperstone and IC Markets. We found no Scope Markets app.
Can I fund a trading account with M-Pesa?
Yes, at all ten brokers on this page: we deposited by M-Pesa at each and withdrew back to M-Pesa, and at several you can do both from the app. Check the route on your own account before you rely on it.
Is a trading platform itself regulated?
No. MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and broker apps are software. The licence that protects you is held by a company, so check that the company holding your account is licensed by the CMA.
