AvaTrade Review Kenya 2026

Ava Trade Kenya Limited holds CMA Licence Number 262 as a non-dealing online foreign exchange broker. AvaTrade, founded in 2006, pairs its own WebTrader and app with MetaTrader 5, a commission-free CFD account with tight EUR/USD spreads, and M-Pesa funding in both directions.

Between 75% and 95% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading Online Forex/CFDs with this provider, according to the risk warning on AvaTrade's Kenyan site (2 November 2026), the range used in the CMA's standard warning. Its chat quoted 64.6% the same day, and avatrade.com 65% (28 October 2026).

AvaTrade platform overview

The fact that matters most before you deposit: AvaTrade has a Kenyan licence, its Kenyan Terms are a contract with that licensed company under Kenyan law, and on our test the money went in and came back out through M-Pesa cleanly, to the shilling. Two things in the paperwork need reading, though. AvaTrade's Kenyan documents say it is the other side of your trades, and they do not explain how that fits the non-dealing broker licence the CMA has issued to Ava Trade Kenya Limited. And the trading server still carries the name of Ava Trade Markets Ltd, the group's British Virgin Islands company. Two other things to know up front: AvaTrade's fee page lists an inactivity fee of USD 50 after three months without trading and a USD 100 annual fee after a year (its Terms give a smaller USD 10 fee), and the account is held in US dollars rather than shillings.

Our expert verdict

We opened a real AvaTrade account as a Kenyan resident on 24 October 2026. The four-step application, opened at 17:55 and submitted at 19:05, gave us trading logins straight away; verification needed a scan of a Kenyan ID card, approved within minutes, and a proof of address, which took until the next day, when the account was fully approved by email. We funded it with KSh 6,497 by M-Pesa on 28 October, credited as USD 50.00 in about four minutes, placed and closed one EUR/USD trade on the AvaTrade WebTrader, and withdrew USD 50.00 of the USD 50.02 balance back to M-Pesa. The shillings arrived the next afternoon: KSh 6,497, the same amount we paid in.

AvaTrade did the money side very well: the deposit was fast, the withdrawal paid out in under a day, and the shilling round trip cost us nothing measurable. The spread on EUR/USD was 0.8 pips with no commission, and the WebTrader, the app and MetaTrader 5 all worked smoothly. The Kenyan Terms put the account with the licensed company, under Kenyan law, with negative balance protection. Three things hold it back. The same documents say AvaTrade deals with you as principal and do not explain how that fits its non-dealing licence, and the trading server is branded with the group's British Virgin Islands company. The published inactivity and admin fees can eat into an account left idle, and AvaTrade's fee page and Terms do not agree on them. And the sign-up promotes a trading bonus, which is worth treating with caution.

What to watch out for

  • AvaTrade's documents describe it as the other side of your trades. The CMA licenses Ava Trade Kenya Limited as a non-dealing online foreign exchange broker. Its Kenyan Terms describe its authorised service as "dealing on own account" (2.2.1), and its Risk Disclosure Notice says each trade is a contract with AvaTrade, leaving you exposed to its credit risk (4.1). The Order Execution Policy in the same set names AvaTrade EU Limited, the group's Irish company, as principal and sole execution venue (2.1). The documents do not explain how this fits the non-dealing licence. One possible reading is that another group company takes the other side, since our MetaTrader 5 server is named after Ava Trade Markets Ltd, but the documents do not say so. We have seen nothing to suggest AvaTrade acts outside its licence.
  • The trading server carries another company's name. The Kenyan Terms are a contract with Ava Trade Kenya Limited under Kenyan law, but the MetaTrader 5 server and its welcome message name Ava Trade Markets Ltd, the group's company regulated in the British Virgin Islands, and so does the copyright line on AvaTrade's Kenyan site.
  • Client money is pooled, and the Terms give AvaTrade a lien over it. Deposits go into a pooled, segregated client account at a bank licensed in Kenya (12.11, 12.12), or abroad in exceptional cases (12.12.5), and AvaTrade accepts no liability if that bank fails (12.13.1). The Terms also give AvaTrade a general lien over everything it holds for you and the right to pledge or lend property held as margin (12.3, 12.5).
  • Two different inactivity fees. The fee page on AvaTrade's Kenyan site lists USD 50 after three months without use, charged again every three months, and USD 100 after a year, both "unless prohibited by law" (2 Nov 2026). The Kenyan Terms say USD 10 after two months, and only while equity is below USD 2,000, plus the same USD 100 a year (38.1, 38.2). On a small account either can wipe out the balance.
  • Bonus marketing at sign-up. The application screens promote a trading bonus, and the deposit confirmation says bonuses are added once documents are verified. Bonuses usually come with conditions, and the Kenyan Terms do not mention one; none was credited to our account.
  • Weekend withdrawal restriction. With open positions you cannot request a withdrawal between Friday 19:00 GMT and Monday 01:00 GMT, and withdrawals go back to the original payment method where possible.
  • Your account is in US dollars, not shillings. M-Pesa amounts are converted each way: on our test, 129.94 KES per USD in and the same out.
  • Proof of address is required. AvaTrade asked for a utility bill or bank statement as well as an ID scan, which delayed full approval to the next day.
  • CFDs only, plus FX options. You do not own the underlying shares or crypto.
  • Between 75% and 95% of retail accounts lose money, according to the risk warning on AvaTrade's Kenyan site (2 Nov 2026), the range used in the CMA's standard warning (Circular No. 03/2023, Annex 2); its chat quoted 64.6% the same day, and avatrade.com 65% (28 Oct 2026).

How we tested AvaTrade

We opened a real account at avatrade.ke as a Kenyan resident on 24 October 2026. The application ran through four steps: email, password and country; personal details including date of birth, address, phone, platform (AVA WebTrader) and base currency (US dollars); financial details covering occupation, employment, source of funds, income, savings, risk tolerance and experience; and a declaration accepting the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and Risk Disclosure Statement. AvaTrade issued trading logins at 19:05 and asked us to verify. On the phone we scanned a Kenyan ID card, approved by 19:23, and uploaded a proof of address; the account was fully approved by email at 12:05 on 25 October. We set up the AvaTrade app with a passcode and biometric login.

We funded by M-Pesa on 28 October. A USD 50 deposit was charged as KSh 6,497 (129.94 KES per USD) through an M-Pesa prompt on the phone and credited about four minutes after we entered the amount. We placed one EUR/USD sell of 0.01 lots on the AvaTrade WebTrader at 1.11330, with a stop loss and take profit, at a spread of 0.8 pips and leverage of 1:400, watched it in the app and in MetaTrader 5 desktop, and closed it at 17:01 at 1.11328, for plus USD 0.02 with no commission or swap. At 17:12 we requested a USD 50 withdrawal to M-Pesa, quoted at KSh 6,499. AvaTrade emailed that it had been processed at 15:37 the next day, and KSh 6,497 arrived on M-Pesa at 15:56 from AvaTrade's payment processor.

We also confirmed licence 262 on the CMA register, searched the CMA website for cautions (none), opened a demo account, tested the website's AI chat and reached a named human agent through the app's chat. On 2 November we went back: we read AvaTrade's Kenyan Terms and Conditions, Risk Disclosure Notice, Order Execution Policy and complaints procedure, captured the fee, deposit and swap-free pages on its Kenyan site, asked the live chat about the minimum deposit, and went through the trade history, the MetaTrader 5 symbol list and the trading calculator. We tested one live account over five days, so our spread, rate and timing figures are single observations, not averages. We did not test card, e-wallet or wire funding, AvaOptions, MetaTrader 4, AvaProtect or the swap-free feature, or call support.

Safety, regulation & Kenyan legal entity

3.5
Safety / 5

AvaTrade in Kenya is licensed through Ava Trade Kenya Limited, which the Capital Markets Authority licenses as a non-dealing online foreign exchange broker under licence number 262. We confirmed the entry on the CMA licensee register, where a search for Ava Trade returns Ava Trade Kenya Limited at licence 262, one of 14 non-dealing online foreign exchange brokers. A search of the CMA website for AvaTrade returned nothing, and AvaTrade is not among the entities in the CMA's public caution of 11 September 2026. AvaTrade's own website footer states the same licence. The CMA's 2017 Regulations define a non-dealing online foreign exchange broker as one that "acts as a link between the foreign exchange market and a client in return for a commission or mark-up in spreads and does not engage in market making activities", and a dealing broker as one licensed to trade "as principal and market maker" (reg. 2).

The company you contract with is the licensed one. AvaTrade's Kenyan Terms and Conditions, effective 1 December 2025, are "a legal contract between AvaTrade Kenya Limited" and you, governed by the laws of Kenya with the Kenyan courts having exclusive jurisdiction (47.1, 47.2), and the bank wire details agree: deposits are paid to Ava Trade Kenya Limited at Ecobank Kenya. Two things still point elsewhere. Our MetaTrader 5 server is named after Ava Trade Markets Ltd, the company the footer says is regulated by the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission, and its welcome message came from that company; the copyright line on AvaTrade's Kenyan site is in its name too. And the group's regulation page, when we captured it, listed seven regions but not Kenya.

AvaTrade's documents describe it as the other side of your trades. The Terms describe Ava Trade Kenya Limited's authorised service as "dealing on own account", trading against its own capital (2.2.1), and say the client is "buying or selling directly from the market maker" (21.1.2). The Risk Disclosure Notice says each trade is a contract with AvaTrade that can only be closed with AvaTrade, with no central clearing, so you are exposed to its credit risk (4.1). The Order Execution Policy in the same set says AvaTrade transacts as principal and is the sole execution venue for your trades (2.1, 3.2), and the company it names is AvaTrade EU Limited, the group's Irish company (1.1). The documents do not explain how this fits Ava Trade Kenya Limited's non-dealing licence. One possible reading is that another group company takes the other side, since our MetaTrader 5 server is named after Ava Trade Markets Ltd, but the documents do not say so. We have seen nothing to suggest AvaTrade acts outside its licence.

On your money, the Terms say deposits go into a segregated client account at a bank licensed under the Central Bank of Kenya Act (12.11.1), as the CMA's 2017 Regulations require (reg. 23(1)). That account is pooled with other clients' money (12.12), banks outside Kenya may be used in exceptional cases (12.12.5), and AvaTrade accepts no liability if a bank fails (12.13.1). The same section gives AvaTrade a general lien over everything it holds for you and the right to pledge or lend property held as margin (12.3, 12.5). The Terms give negative balance protection on forex, CFDs, options and spread bets, "your losses can never exceed your Equity" (15.9), the protection the CMA has required since its Circular No. 03/2023 (para. 7); futures are excluded. None of this is compensation: section 18 of the Capital Markets Act sets up the Investor Compensation Fund for the failure of a licensed stockbroker or dealer, not an online forex broker. We found no published financial statements for Ava Trade Kenya Limited.

Complaints go first to customer support, then on AvaTrade's complaint form to complaints@avatrade.com. Its Kenyan complaints procedure promises an acknowledgement within 5 business days and an update at least every 15, aims to resolve it within 30 calendar days, and if you are not satisfied with the final response you can refer it to the CMA's complaints unit. The Terms give a different address, cs@avatrade.com, and up to 40 business days (14.2, 14.4).

Opening was fully online. The four-step application asks for an email, password and country, then personal details (name, date of birth, address, postcode, phone, platform and base currency), then financial details (occupation, employment, source of funds, annual income, savings, risk tolerance and experience), then a declaration that you are not a US citizen or resident and acceptance of the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and Risk Disclosure Statement. Every step runs under a banner promoting a trading bonus.

AvaTrade approved the application at once and issued WebTrader and app logins, then asked for verification in the phone's browser: a scan of an ID card or passport through the camera, and a utility bill, bank statement or similar proof of address dated within six months, plus a short tax and nationality declaration. Our Kenyan ID card was approved within minutes, at 19:23 on 24 October 2026, and the account was fully approved by email at 12:05 the next day, about 17 hours after we submitted. No selfie or liveness check was requested.

The only base currency offered was US dollars. A demo account with USD 100,000 of virtual funds opens in one click from the portal, and you can add an Options account there too. For traders who cannot pay or receive interest, AvaTrade's Kenyan site offers a swap-free feature: once the account is verified and funded you request it by email, it takes one to two business days, and positions then carry no overnight fees for up to five days (2 November 2026; Terms 26). We did not request it.

AvaTrade funds Kenyan accounts by M-Pesa, with Airtel Money on the same payment page, crypto through UMoney, Visa and Mastercard cards, Skrill and Neteller, and bank wire to an Ecobank Kenya account in the name of Ava Trade Kenya Limited, in US dollars or shillings. The funding screens did not state a minimum, and AvaTrade gave us two: on 2 November 2026 its Kenyan site listed USD 100 for cards and wires, and its AI chat said USD 100, but the human agent it handed us to said "Minimum deposit is $50 for your region". Our USD 50 M-Pesa deposit went through.

We tested the M-Pesa deposit on 28 October 2026. You enter a dollar amount and the form shows the shilling charge: USD 50 came to KSh 6,497, or 129.94 KES per USD, with no separate fee. An M-Pesa prompt arrived on the phone, and the account showed USD 50.00 and "Deposit Completed" about four minutes after we entered the amount. AvaTrade also emailed a first-deposit confirmation for USD 50.00.

The withdrawal was also by M-Pesa, made in the app. You choose an amount and a purpose; the form says withdrawals go back to the original method where possible, and that accounts with open positions cannot request one between Friday 19:00 GMT and Monday 01:00 GMT. When we continued, the app warned that the account had open positions, although our trade had closed at 17:01, ten minutes earlier; we pressed Continue and the request went through. We requested USD 50 at 17:12 on 28 October, quoted at KSh 6,499, and the app's balance history shows the USD 50 leaving the account at 17:12:30. AvaTrade emailed that the request had been processed at 15:37 on 29 October, and KSh 6,497 reached M-Pesa at 15:56, 22 hours and 44 minutes after the request. That is exactly what we paid in, so the shilling round trip cost nothing we could measure. AvaTrade states that e-wallets take up to one business day, cards up to five and wires up to ten.

The MetaTrader 5 symbol list on our live account groups AvaTrade's markets into forex and CFDs on indices, metals, energies, bonds, shares, ETFs and agricultural commodities. Forex splits into majors, crosses and minors, plus groups for the Turkish lira, South African rand, Russian rouble and Israeli shekel. The index CFDs include the US Tech 100, US 500, US 30, US 2000, a dollar index and Canada 60; the metals include gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper, with gold and silver futures; the energies are Brent, crude oil, heating oil, natural gas and gasoline; and the two bond CFDs are the Euro-Bund and a Japanese government bond. Share CFDs come from the UK, France, Italy, Canada, Germany, the US and the Netherlands, the ETF CFDs from the US, and the agricultural list includes cocoa, coffee, cotton, sugar, soybeans, corn and wheat (2 November 2026).

AvaTrade's website also lists crypto CFDs, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple and a Crypto 10 index, but the MetaTrader 5 list on our account had no crypto group. AvaTrade also offers FX options through AvaOptions and a separate Options account. We traded EUR/USD only, and apart from the energies and bonds we did not count how many instruments each group holds. Apart from the options, everything is a CFD, so you do not own the underlying.

Fees and spreads

On the CFD account we used, the cost of trading is the spread: EUR/USD was quoted at 1.11316 and 1.11324 when we placed our order on 28 October 2026, a spread of 0.8 pips, and it stayed at 0.8 pips on the web and in the app all session, with no commission. AvaTrade's fee page says it is paid through the spread, built into its quoted prices. That is one session's observation. AvaTrade's instruments index gives a typical EUR/USD spread of 0.8 pips, the median over a previous quarter (3 November 2026), and on 2 November 2026 AvaTrade's calculator put the spread cost of a full lot of EUR/USD at USD 13, or 1.3 pips. Overnight positions pay an overnight premium; ours was closed the same day and paid none, and the trade history shows no commission or swap.

Our M-Pesa deposit and withdrawal showed no fee, and the round trip came back to the same KSh 6,497 we paid in. The fees to watch are on idle accounts, and AvaTrade publishes two versions. The fee page on its Kenyan site lists a USD 50 inactivity fee after three consecutive months without use, charged again every three months, and a USD 100 administration fee after twelve months, both "unless prohibited by law" (2 November 2026; the international page said the same on 26 October). The Kenyan Terms say USD 10 after two consecutive months without use, again every two months, but only while your equity is below USD 2,000, plus the same USD 100 a year (38.1, 38.2). The Terms add that new or higher charges are posted on the website seven days before they apply (16.6). We have not seen which AvaTrade charges in practice.

AvaTrade's own WebTrader runs on a MetaTrader 5 server and is clean and quick, with a watchlist, charts, news, an order ticket showing the spread, margin and leverage, a stop loss and take profit, and the optional AvaProtect add-on. We placed and closed a real EUR/USD trade on it. The same account opens in MetaTrader 5 desktop, which we also used, and the portal links DupliTrade for copy trading. MetaTrader 4, AvaOptions, Mac trading and AvaSocial are listed on the website, and a demo account opens in one click. The WebTrader's settings cover language, time zone, sounds, automated trading, notifications and hotkeys; we found no two-factor login option there (2 November 2026). We did not test MetaTrader 4, AvaOptions or DupliTrade.

The AvaTrade app covers the full cycle: a watchlist, charts with your positions drawn on them, order entry, positions and history, deposits, withdrawals, balance history, and a Discovery section with analyst views, news, an economic calendar and a calculator. Its trade history gives each closed trade's open and close times and prices, stop loss and take profit, commission and swaps. It offers a 4-digit passcode and biometric login at first sign-in, and its chat reached a human agent. We watched our trade and made the withdrawal entirely in the app without problems.

AvaTrade serves Kenya under a CMA licence held by Ava Trade Kenya Limited, signs clients up at avatrade.ke under Kenyan Terms governed by Kenyan law, takes M-Pesa and Airtel Money deposits in shillings, pays out to M-Pesa, and accepts shilling wires to a Kenyan bank. Complaints that AvaTrade does not resolve can go to the CMA. The gaps are that the account is in US dollars, that the Nairobi phone number in the Terms is not on the contact page we captured, and that the trading server carries the name of the group's BVI company.

AvaTrade offers an email form, support by email at cs@avatrade.com, a worldwide list of phone numbers, WhatsApp and chat. The Kenyan Terms give a Nairobi number, +254 20 515 4022 (2.2), which was not on the contact page we captured; that page shows a Finnish number and a UK WhatsApp line. The chat starts with an AI agent. On the website it answered our trading hours question correctly on 26 October 2026; in the app on 28 October, the bot took our name and email and handed us to a named human agent, though we did not capture the answer to our question about the withdrawal cut-off. On 2 November we asked whether we could trade with USD 25. The AI said the minimum deposit was USD 100, so USD 25 would not meet it; when we asked for a person, it took our name and email, an agent joined within three minutes, and told us the minimum is USD 50 for our region. During sign-up on 24 October the chat showed a technical difficulties message. The trading week runs from Sunday 21:00 to Friday 21:00 GMT, with crypto around the clock. We did not call the phone lines or test email.

The app's Discovery section brings together Trading Central analyst views, a Market Buzz feed, featured forex ideas, an economic calendar, Dow Jones news and a trading calculator, and the app menu adds signals, alerts and a tutorial. AvaTrade's app promises guides and courses for beginners, which we did not work through. We tried the trading calculator on AvaTrade's Kenyan site on 2 November 2026 with our own trade, 0.01 lots of EUR/USD at 1:400: it returned a required margin of USD 280.08 and a stop-loss amount of USD 83, figures for a full lot of 100,000 euros rather than 0.01, so check the size its results assume.

Verdict

In our test, EUR/USD cost 0.8 pips with no commission, our M-Pesa deposit was credited in about four minutes, the withdrawal reached M-Pesa the next afternoon, and the shilling round trip came back with no measurable cost. AvaTrade's Kenyan Terms put your account with the CMA-licensed company under Kenyan law, with negative balance protection. Two findings weigh against it: the same documents make AvaTrade the other side of your trades and do not explain how that fits its non-dealing licence; and the inactivity and admin fees are heavy on small balances in an idle account.

Frequently asked questions

Is AvaTrade regulated in Kenya?
Yes. Ava Trade Kenya Limited holds Capital Markets Authority Licence Number 262 as a non-dealing online forex broker, and we confirmed it on the CMA register. AvaTrade's Kenyan Terms make it the company you contract with, under Kenyan law, although the MetaTrader 5 server still names Ava Trade Markets Ltd, the group's BVI company.
Does AvaTrade take the other side of my trades?
Its Kenyan documents say it does. The Terms describe its authorised service as "dealing on own account" (2.2.1), and the Risk Disclosure Notice says each trade is a contract with AvaTrade that can only be closed with AvaTrade (4.1). Its CMA licence is for a non-dealing broker, and the documents do not explain how the two fit together. We have seen nothing to suggest AvaTrade acts outside its licence.
What is the minimum deposit at AvaTrade in Kenya?
AvaTrade gave us two answers on 2 November 2026: its Kenyan site lists USD 100 for cards and wires, and its AI chat said USD 100, but a human agent said USD 50 for our region. Our USD 50 M-Pesa deposit (KSh 6,497) went through on 28 October.
Can I deposit and withdraw with M-Pesa at AvaTrade?
Yes. We paid KSh 6,497 by M-Pesa on 28 October 2026, credited as USD 50.00 in about four minutes, and withdrew USD 50 back to M-Pesa, receiving KSh 6,497 the next afternoon.
How long do AvaTrade withdrawals take?
Our M-Pesa withdrawal arrived 22 hours and 44 minutes after the request. AvaTrade states up to one business day for e-wallets, five for cards and ten for wires.
Does AvaTrade charge an inactivity fee?
Yes, though AvaTrade publishes two versions. The fee page on its Kenyan site lists USD 50 after three months without use, then every three months, plus USD 100 after twelve months, unless prohibited by law (2 November 2026). The Kenyan Terms say USD 10 after two months while equity is below USD 2,000, plus the same USD 100 (38.1, 38.2).
Does AvaTrade offer negative balance protection in Kenya?
Yes. AvaTrade's Kenyan Terms say that on forex, CFDs, options and spread bets "your losses can never exceed your Equity" (15.9). Futures are excluded.
Can I hold an AvaTrade account in KES?
No. The account is in US dollars, and M-Pesa shillings are converted each way: 129.94 KES per USD in and out on our test.
Which platforms does AvaTrade offer?
The AvaTrade WebTrader, the AvaTrade app, MetaTrader 5, MetaTrader 4, AvaOptions and DupliTrade. We tested the WebTrader, the app and MetaTrader 5.
